What's the fruiting Trigger For Morel Mushrooms?

Greetings,
I've read in a number of publications that it's easy to grow the morel mycelium, but getting them to fruit is really difficult. I've heard that someone did figure out how to get them to fruit but is keeping it as a mycological secret. I'm pretty sure that someone figured out how to trigger the fruiting stage because I've seen numerous photos on the internet and in books of morels growing in large tubs. However, that was some time ago. I was wondering if someone let the cat out of the bag yet and told people how to nudge morel mycelium to fruit?

Comments anyone? Or any ideas on how to do it?

South Korea has farms producing Brown Matsutake mushrooms off of blocks like you would see for Shiitake !
They have been able to apply this technology to grow Boletus edulis, Chantrelles etc without a tree host ! Mycorrhizal mushrooms gone domesticated !

Porcini

Porcini ( Boletus edulis ) will be poppin up soon around Coastal Pine trees. Generally, it take a few inches of rain to get them started provided temperatures don't dip below 55*, they like warmer [ 60-70's ] temperatures for fruiting. under ideal conditions, they should start fruiting within 2-3 weeks after the first rains.At the beginning of the season they are most likely to be seen along the edges of coastal pines ( long needle ), as the season declines, the fruiting appear closer to the base of the tree host. When you find a King Bolete at the base of the tree, it is called " kissing " and marks the end of the season in that area. Look for shrumps poppin up in the pine duff, these are small and sometimes large bulbus mounds lifting up from the ground and 1/2 the time it's the mushroom you want. Amanita sp. like A. muscaria/ gemmata are " indicator species " for the bolete. If you see those, the conditions for boletes in the area will likewise be fruiting somewhere close. Good luck !

can anyone recommend a good mushroom guide? i love mushrooms, i'm constantly spotting them, i can tell what's good and what's bad but i don't really have anyone to rely on with my choices, so a good book would be most helpful.

of Spring coccora. They look just like the fall coccora except the cap is a kind of Lemon yellow, grows around
Oak trees. Be careful, it does have poisonous look alikes. Even found a couple of Butter boletes !

My best buddy was a grad student in mycology and we'd go out collecting various mushrooms for his research as well as for eating. One year, the grounds keepers laid woodchips on all the landscape beds across campus...and lo and behold, morels popped up everywhere! No students except the itty bitty mycology dept. realized that the mushroom fairies blessed us that spring. We literally filled at least ten paper grocery bags with the blissful morel mushroom. I have collected morels in the wild, but never in such quantity as that time on campus.

Last week, the mushroom fairies have visited me again. Morels are popping up all over my back yard! This past fall and winter I re-landscaped my yard, and brought in redwood mulch. I'm convinced that they didn't hitch a ride on the mulch this time, but were latent in the soil. I've read that this variety of morel is called "landscape morel," and that they typically flush the first year that the soil is disturbed, and don't fruit thereafter. The only drawback to my morel discovery, is that they aren't fruiting all at once, so I'm trying to collect them as they mature and saving them so that I have enough to make at least one meal. I just can't bring myself to cook up two mushrooms, ya know? I've posted two pictures of one specimen, and will post more soon.

Salt Point all the way down to Santa Cruz has Porchinis busting out ( Boletus edulis ) and Matsutakes are starting to pop up around Boonville ( if ya know where to go ), Chantrelles are going off in the Berkeley Hills. Oyster mushrooms are everywhere, Butter boletes were happening in Marin maybe a few are still shrumpin. Bluits and Fried Chicken mushrooms are ongoing and it wasn't too good for Amanita coccora this year ( at least from my experience ) Candy Caps are just around the corner !

Bay area mushroom foray 3/25

On Saturday 3/25 at 1pm a mushroom identification hike will leave from the los trancos open space preserve, in Palo Alto, CA.

Everyone is invited to scour the woods in search of all kinds of mushrooms.

You will probably learn to identify:

* Golden Chanterelles
* Black Chanterelles
* Candy Caps
* Blewits
* Psilocybe cyanescens (from the book only, per uncle sam's recommendation)
* Hedgehog mushrooms
* Bears Head
* Oyster mushrooms

and other interesting and useful plants and mushrooms which grow deep in the woods surrounding the bay area.

We will meet at 1pm at this park, in the parking lot on the north side of page mill road (on your right if you are coming from 280):

http://www.openspace.org/preserves/pr_los_trancos.asp

Located at +37.1933 -122.1045, a google map of the exact meeting point is here:

http://www.google.com/lochp?hl=en&tab=wl&q=37.326033333,%20-122.179372222%20(Los%20Trancos%20Open%20Space%20Preserve)%20

Also check out the google hybrid map and directions below.

We will leave this location at 1:15 pm, so don't be later than that. If you are later, show up anyway and look for a group of people in the woods along the fault trail.

There will be a few miles of off trail hiking on steep hillsides, so don't wear any clothing you don't mind getting dirty.

Dress kind of warm. Bring some water, maybe a little food, and a backpack.

The hike will go until it gets dark, though late comers and early leavers are welcomed.

It has been raining for a couple weeks, and I have recently verified that there are plenty of mushrooms in these woods. But the rainy season is almost over and this is probably the last big mushroom hunt until October.

Directions:

Take I-280 to Page Mill Road. Go west on Page Mill Road for 7 miles. Los Trancos Open Space Preserve will be located on the right across from the Monte Bello Open Space Preserve. The mushroom hunt will meet in the parking lot on the right (north) side. Parking is available for 20 vehicles. Additional parking and restroom facilities are available at the Monte Bello Open Space Preserve parking.

I just posted a photo of a purple mushroom I found in Oregon, near Seaside, growing in conifers near the coast. It was in October. It resembles the blewits (lepista nuda) we find in Santa Cruz, but is such a striking purple, I wasn't sure. Any one know their Oregon mushrooms?

This week

Lets see, I found about 10+lbs of golden Chantrelles in the Berkeley Hills above UC Berkeley, the Oak groves were just peppered with them, picked so many I got sick of them, still have lots to get rid of. Found some nice large specimens of Bog Russulas growing right next to a flush of Rosy Russuals which are poisonous. You can tell the two apart by the stipe and taste;the Rosy Russulas have a pinkish red stem and a hot peppery taste. The Bog Russulas have a white stipe with a pith in the middle that often turns grey with age and the cap is often an off light dingy orange - yellow in the center turning wine red out to the cap margine. The Bog Russula is quite tasty and when dried it kinda tastes like roast beef.
Found one puny Butter bolete in the same area and a bunch of Oyster mushrooms.
Yesterday I went out to Marin watershed area and scored big time. Found a bunch of excellent GREEN Russulas whcih might be Russula olivecea ( sp? ), these are rather uncommon and rare to find. I'll tell ya this, those are the most tasty mushrooms I've eaten to date, more prefered than the Boletus edulis !!! The taste is sweet and nutty, the smell of fresh specimens is very inviting. The flesh is dense and not crumbly like most russulas.Be sure not to confuse it with Amanita phalloides ( the Death Cap ), the green cap of this russula is quite similiar. The Green Russulas like Oak groves and mixed woods with Oak. Also found many other edible russulas. Be sure to taste them if yer not sure of edibility, most of the poisonous varieties have a distinctive hot peppery taste. Also found dozens of Woodland Agaricus mushrooms, they have a definitive Almond smell and are quite good in omlets and on pizzas. Lots of Oyster mushrooms were about and maggot free too! Found a few Hericium erinaceus mushrooms and a flush of Hericium coraloides too, quite a pretty mushroom. Amanita coccora's were spent and not worth picking, lots of Amanita grissettes busting out all over the place as well as Amanita phalloides the Death Cap,plus I found a few examples of Amanita virosa the Destroying Angel which I haven't come across in over 15 years. All kinds of boltes were out but none of the ones I covet were to be found like the Butter Bolete. Honey mushrooms were plentiful for those who like them as were the Poisonous Fiberhead mushrooms. Bluitts were also out in full force and not too maggoty either for a change ! Found some fat Laughing Gyms but they are far too bitter to eat. Fried Chicken mushrooms were also plentiful and I found one specimen with a cap 8 inches in diameter ! That cooked up nicely last night. The Green russula though was the best score of the week, damn that is a tasty mushroom !

This area near a complex of water sheds is amazing for it's diversity. Last weekend I found; King Boletes, Queen Boletes,
Butter boletes, yellow pored red cap boletes, Fried Chicken mushrooms ( yum ! ), Amanita coccora, Spring coccora ( even though it's Fall ! ) Amanita vaginata, Amanita grissette, Blueits, Oyster mushrooms, Russulas, Woodland Agaricus ( yum ), Honey mushrooms, and Turkey tails. The park regulations say you can't pick mushrooms in these areas. Don't go pickin with a basket or bag in your hands in open areas where you might be seen, keep the goodies in a pack for covert harvesting. Picking mushrooms is GOOD for the environment. When you pick up a mushroom you help it distribute spores.
In these woods I noticed a lot of trees that had fallen because of Sudden Oak Death - a disease caused by a fungus. These trees were very large. I suggested to a Ranger who I had a chat with that they should innoculate these fallen trees with mushrooms to help them break down quicker so as to unlock the nutrients to feed the forest eco system. I make it a habit to bring a drill bit and some plug spawn in order to innoculate freshly fallen trees. You can tell if the tree is primo for innoculation if it still has leaves on the branches ( dead or fresh ) If freshly fallen from storms wait a couple of weeks as most Oaks have anti fungal agents and these take a little while to break down.

I'm something of a beginner in the world of mushroom hunting for eating. I worked for a while in Muir Woods, and learned the bliss of hunting for viewing, but never felt comfortable picking anything to eat (even outside the bounderies of the park). Are there groups that go into the woods for the beginners, or anyone willing to take a fledgling under their wing? Thanks so much!!

i'm a novice fungist, bear with me please.

recently acquired a jar full of forest woodchips with quite a bit of azurescens mycaleum scattered about through it. i have been trying to 'contact' the intelligence of a creature such as this, that i may study its nature, and it arrived in my bedroom under auspicious circumstances. thanks universe!

i didn't expect an answer to my inquiry in this form of opportunity, and am admittedly somewhat underprepared for this kind of undertaking.

anyway, i'm looking for suggestions as to a course of action to be taken with this. i was told by the person who gave it to me that i should spend time daily with it, singing to it and meditating with it and such, to try and convince it to colonize the whole substrate, and go from there.

anyone have experience cultivating from found mycaleum? i am wondering what this is all going to cost me in equipment, if it reaches the stage of colonization that requires providing optimum fruiting conditions and whatnot. roadblocks to be wary of? things to avoid? good places to read about this? etc..

Looking to Barter or Buy Medicinal Mushrooms from Local pickers

I am a homeopath and herbalist here in Canada with a holistic viral treatment clinic. I have been using medicinal mushrooms for a couple of years now in my protocols for herpes, hpv, cervical dysplasia and chronic fatigue syndrome. I am interested in investigating other species of mushrooms- thus far my work has mostly been with cordyceps s, ganoderma l, innotus o, grifola. I am looking to barter or buy small quantities of different medicinal mushrooms from anyone who gathers them and who can accurately identify the species. The quantities I need are quite small and shouldn't present any ecological issues. I am interested in any mushrooms with medicinal potential.

While at the Autonomous Mutant Festival in WA> near Mt St. Helen's we came across " Glow in the Dark Mycelium " growing on rotted trees ( Conifers ). It was pretty amazing stuff. Soem folks used it to mark trails at night * grinz * Once removed from it's tree host, it would slowly fade in glowing.
I know Paul Stamets had come up with a grow kit of this glowing mycelium I believe, it doesn't create any mushroom fruiting bodies tho.....

I was hiking today and think I found a truffle. At first I thought it was an empty egg fallen from a nest as there was a little hole/nibble in it. When I picked it up, then at first I swear it looked like a tiny potato... but upon smelling it, it's definately a fungus... Don't want to eat it until I'm sure... any suggestions? It smells very yummy...

Found a mess of Black Chantrelles ( Craterellus cornucopioides )this last weekend at Big Basin. They love to grow in thick leaf litter, especially from Tan Oak. They can be hard to see due to thier very dark colour and curling cap margin, they almost look like burnt leaves. Very tasty, more so than the Orange var. Keep an eye out.:<o>:.

Share some mushroom hunting adventures...

So now you will hear a tale of magic wonderment (if you stop staring at the bottom of your empty Grog mug and pay attention!):

This be a true tale... (though spruced up a bit...) Starring Amber Amanita, Miica Wisp-her, Siduri, and Melian, Queen of the Elves...

***The Quest for the Chanterelles***

Once upon a time, there was a maiden most benevolent and fair named Amber Amanita. She had searched the local Forest far and wide but couldn't find any Chanterelles. So one day whilst her friend, Miica was visiting she told her of her plight and that this land did not have Chanterelles. Miica, seeing Amber's sadness said to her, "We will search for land where there are the Chanterelles and we will live there in gladness".

On their way out of their kingdom and passing the castle Melian stopped them and said, "Where are you going equipped as for a journey?" Amber told the Queen Melian of their quest and Melian said, "I wanna go too!" She then called for her canid Siduri to come with great haste. "We will bring Siduri," she said "for she will warn us of dangers and can track any scent and is swift as the wind!"

They searched many lands and traveled many miles. Over rock and under fen they traveled but still found no Chanterelles. They all sat together with heads bowed thinking of where they could now go, when Miica suddenly exclaimed, "We will head for the Coast. There are many forests between us and the Sea far away..."

So with Hope renewed they traveled West and North and came to a fork in the road. Amber felt a twinge to go down the left fork but carried on regardless. They came upon a place where they could go no further. At that moment Amber thought, "why didn't you listen to your intuition you nimwit!". So they turned back and when they came upon the fork again, Amber did not falter.

They traveled many winding roads when Amber felt she was in need of a rest. She looked around and noticed a sign pointing towards some Falls. We will continue until we come to the Falls, and then we shall break our fast there. Heartily Miica and Queen Melian agreed (and Siduri was beginning to look carriage-sick).

Not long after going down the Fall trail a wise old Owl flew directly over Amber and dropped a feather at her feet. "This is an auspicious blessing" she exclaimed and stuck the feather into her dreads. Miica said, "Yay!" and Melian said, "Ah, no fair!" (j/k)

Amber started to notice many beautiful mushrooms popping up their little heads everywhere... but still no Chanterelles... But lo! "What are these?" she excitely asks... Can it be? It's not Chanterelles but... <flip flip flip pages> "Oh, my ----ing God" she says. "These are magic mushrooms!". Miica, says, "nah-ah!" They suddenly start jumping excitely about while Melian thinks, "cool". They carefully and respectfully gather some specimens into their baskets and continue on.

They start coming into new trees and feel a magickal charge. Amber is drawn to a ring of trees and enters the circle. Upon entering the Alders she lays down in the center and looks up into the leaves. She sees a great eye in the interlacing branches and leaves and then closes her eyes. She communes with the spirit in the trees and tells it of her quest. "Your heart is benevolent and I sense no piracy in you. You are welcome here, and I shed my favor upon you". She feels a light upon her brow and opens her eyes.

She calls all to her, "Hearken to me! We will find Chanterelles! They are very close... I have asked the forest spirit to aid me in my quest. Already the day is waning, we must away!"

They skipped along the trail and called often to the Forest Spirits, "Lead us to the Chanerelles!" After thrice the call was made they came upon a pine filled glade... And Amber looked and there she saw, something peachy through the moss... "Oh how beauteous fair!", said she. And down she bowed and called to all... "Behold! What do you see? One for you and One for me!" But when they looked around they saw, they were plenty, everywhere!

Oh, joyous a day that was... And while they did not move to that land, they visit it often when the Autumn winds blow the leaves from the trees...

The End

Amanita

It's that time of year fungus lovers! I've so far found 3 new patches of this wonderful mushroom and it's one of my favorites. They're commonly found under monterey cypress trees which have lots of duff, particularly if they're on a mild hillside. They're very easily distinguised by the "shaggy" scales on the cap and sometimes on the stem. Their common name is the "shaggy parasol".

Pleurotus ostreatus. I usually find this mushroom on Oaks and sometimes on other trees. This afternoon I found it growing on a Monterey Pine stump - that's a first for me. I didn't think they liked conifers. There are two nice baby clusters about to bust out, found one mature specimen, no maggots, typical grey brown cap and quite tasy btw ! Anyonelse ever find them growing on conifers?

Last weekend on Sunday Dec 12 th, I found an Amanita velosa growing in Marine county. This species usually fruits in the Spring, not before Winter ! This is not right at all. It's also called the "Spring Amanita" . They are very tasty btw, one of my favs. You can find them under Oaks and in mixed woods. The Salmon pink cap, skull cap, non solid stem and sack like volva are good indicators but be careful not to confuse it with other poisonous Amanitas sp. This mushroom usually grows out in the open inbetween trees sometimes in large clusters. Very sweet and crisp, yum. It's just wierd finding those and then around the next hill more Amanita calyptroderma ( coccora ) fruiting under Oaks. The Spring Amanita I made into an omlet with some green onions and black pepper, * burp! *!

Help - Poisonous Mushrooms - SF Area

I am looking for a Mycologist in the SF Bay Area - preferably in San Jose.

I have two types of mushrooms in the yard - soft, fluffy little (old silver dollar size at largest) ones that grown in the lawn and really big, woody brown ones with redwood toned stocks with yellow feet(appitizer plate size) which grown near the edge of the wooden gazebo. My tots (2 & 3) love mushrooms and I am worried about them eating them when I am not looking so I am wondering how to get rid of them permanently in case they are poisonous.

I hear it is REALLY hard to completely kill off a mushroom growth so I figured maybe the first step is to find out if they are poisonous and then get specific advice on how to get rid of them if they are poisonous.

Can you help?

I like Russulas even though sometimes I feel like I'm playing Russian roulette with my stomache! I found lots last Sunday, big ones and the big ones tend to be edible. I found a large Russula resembling Russula brunneoviolacea a violet varied coloured Russula with a meaty solid white stem, slightly bulbous at the base and a Green one that resembles Russula heterophylla, light green varied ( looks like tree frog colours ) cap, white solid stem, both edible and rather tasty. No peppery taste. I didn't hurl and my stomache wuz fine * grin *. There are Russulas that will make you sick like Russula emetica, it has a red cap and white stem.
Many are edible. The book " Mushrooms of North America" by Roger Phillips has a large section on Russulas, check it out.

The San Francisco Mycological Society annual fungus fair is happening this weekend at the Oakland Museum. I will be there working the Chantrelle table and Medicinal mushroom tables.
I'll have photos with me of THE FUNGUS HUMUNCULOUS, this huge polypore I found in the Purissima Open Space Preserve at about 2000 feet. Hope to get pics scanned soon and posted here, it's one hell of a mushroom! So far, all the " experts " I've showed it too last night during set up for the fair have no clue as to what it is, and that tickles me pink ! Cya.

Inonotus dryadeus is a polypore ( large ) that likes Oak trees and slowly kills them by infecting the heart wood. The pore surface is white like a Ganoderma polypore and will mark brown when scratched. The spores are whitish. The shelf margine of the mushroom is pitted with drops of ozzing fluid, looks kinda like it has a hundred eyes ! It was so large a polypore that my puny micromax 35m camera could't capture the whole thing. It was one strange encounter .

Chantrelles are happening. Just find some Oak groves near creeks or temporary water ways. If possible and legal in the place you are hunting them, it's handy to have a rake to move the leaves around under Oaks( spread them back over after you find some ) . You can also find other mushrooms this way that may lay hidden under the duff of leaves and decaying substrate.
Chantrelles are best cooked in a dry sautee, a little salt will help draw out all the water these mushrooms hold and allows them to cook in their own juices. When the juice cooks down I live to add Garlic or Green Onion with some Walnut or Olive oil and cook that for another 5 min. Grubbin....

Butter boletes are still happening. I luv this bolete more than Boletus edulis. Slice it up and dry it and it becomes quite a tasty chip. They prefer Oaks and mixed woods. The yellow flesh and pores and the slight blueing reaction are good keys for identification. It often has a very bulbus stipe, sometimes resembling Boletus satanas in it's early stages so check the pores, B. satanas will have pinkish to red pores and when cut usually has a rather rapis and rich blueing effect ( semi-indigo ). The flesh of this bolete is denser than B. edulis in comparison. I have found both fruiting at the same time within 15 yards of each other. Butter boletes I've noticed like the areas around Oaks that are semi open with tuffs of tall grass growing here and there. Lots of fun find, especially under shrumps of leaves.

There was a fatal poisoning last month and Amanita
phalloides is most likely the culprit. I've seen LOTS of them
in the hills around Berkeley and Oakland lately. There are a few pics of them in the tribe photo archive here for identification, it does vary in colour sometimes. Avoid touching them with your bare hands. I've had the tips of my fingers tingle after handling a potent looking specimen. The toxins could be absorbed through the pores of your skin. It likes to live around Oaks mostly in the Bay Area and mixed woods around conifers.
